Pre-Season Marathon Training: Week 3

It was a good week.

I almost left it at that ^^^ Wouldn’t it have made for a funny blog post, LOL??

Anyway, here’s the boring details 😀

Monday, 6/13–4 easy miles, 9:37 avg

I was hellbent on getting my easy miles to be easy going into Week 3, and I did a way better job at keeping it steady.

Splits–9:38, 9:48:9:35, 9:34

I think it helped that it was 90 degrees out (at 7 p.m.).

Tuesday, 6/14–5 morning miles, 9:11 avg; 3 evening miles, 9:37 avg

I did a two for Tuesday helping my girl Foxy Jen on her workout. 1 mile WU, 3 miles of something–I forgot what her specific plan was, lol–and one mile CD.

Splits–10:14, 8:54, 8:53, 8:49, 9:05 <—we didn’t do so well keeping the last mile a cool down :/

Then, I ran 3 easy (and very hot) evening miles with some buddies.

Wednesday, 6/15–Rest Day

Hanson’s has Wednesdays as the sole rest day. Gonna start sticking it in there to get used to it.

Thursday, 6/16–7 morning miles, 9:31 avg; 2.2 evening miles, 10:35 avg

Another double. I did another workout with Jen. She had a 1 mile WU, 5 miles MP, and 1 mile CD. I really think that the only way I’ve been helping her is by keeping her company because I seem to ruin her pacing. She was supposed to be at a 9:45 pace for her MP miles and our splits were:

Splits–10:01 WU, 9:33, 9:37, 9:36, 9:18, 9:14, 9:29 CD =FAIL

Then, in the evening, it was RoadRunner’s monthly Adventure Run! Our group decided the only thing we wanted to accomplish was running to the water slide and back. It’s been ridiculously hot here in Phoenix.

After the run were the raffles and I won a free entry to a local 5k next month!! 😀

Friday, 6/17–Rest Day

I meant to run. But I had gotten home pretty late the night before and said no to my alarm clock. So I spent the morning tracking Suzy‘s marathon online (she killed it, tying her PR of 3:06 <– you read that right).

Plus, my husband and I had a rare date night and no way would I ruin my hair with a morning run.

Yes, I made my husband take a pic of me. Yes, I'm wearing my Garmin.

We had plans to go a Spanish rock concert of two my favorite bands, Hombres G and Los Enanitos Verdes. It’s seriously times like these when I wished the whole world spoke Spanish. People are missing out on some amazing music.

Saturday, 6/18–Easy 4 miles, 9:58 avg

After a week of two doubles, a mid-week longish run, a mild hangover, and 100 degree weather, it wasn’t difficult keeping the pace easy for this run.

Splits–10:25, 10:11, 9:53, 9:26

Total miles for Week 3–25.58 I feel really good with the build up; week one 21 miles, and week two 22 miles. It’s still super low compared to what awaits me, but I like where I’m headed and how I’m feeling. Just want to stay injury free 🙂

–How was your running week?

–What is the last concert you saw?

Phoenix Marathon Ambassador and an Instagram GIVEAWAY!!!

Check out my Insta for deets!

Happy Hump Day!! It certainly is in HellyLand as I’m so happy to share with you that I was chosen to be a Phoenix Marathon ambassador 😀 If you’ve been reading this blog a while, then you’ll remember this was my very first marathon back in 2014.

Each year since, the race has given me some pretty special moments–my first DNF in 2015, and my current half PR in 2016. You’re probably thinking how my DNF could be “special” but it was. I learned so much from that low moment as much as learned from my high at this year’s race.

It’s a race I’m pretty certain I’ll do each year because I really do love it. I love the course–it’s not intimidating at all

and I love that so many of my friends do it. It’s just a big running party. For it being *the* Phoenix Marathon, it’s not a huge race (yet) so it has a real homey feel to it. The start of the full has bonfires to keep us warm (it’s cold here in February! 50 degrees cold!) and fireworks to send us off.

It’s also a race many are finding out is a good course to BQ. Good ‘ol Suz killed the course last year and several of my friends have come out of there with qualifying times.

Because I want everyone to come visit me in Arizona and because I know you’ll want to escape your cold in Februrary, I’m giving away a FREE entry to the Phoenix HALF or FULL. The giveaway is on my Instagram only (sorry non Insta ppl). If you don’t have Instagram or don’t want to wait, you can use Helly10 for $10 off your registration for the FULL or HALF distance. Sign up and run with meeeeee!!!! ❤ , helly

–Do you have a local race you always participate in?

–How’s the weather where you’re from in February? (It’s bliss here.)

Linking up with Smitha and Erica for their Wednesday Giveaway Roundup!!

Pre-Season Marathon Training: Week 1

Well, you guys know that I decided to go with good ‘ol Hanson’s this time around for NYC Marathon and once I took a good look at the plan, I realized that was a whole lotta miles. I figured it would do me good to get going on getting used to running a lot. Like, a lot a lot.

Having taken a week off to recover from the Canyon, I went for my first official run last Sunday–exactly a week after my second day crossing.

Sunday, 5/29–3 miles easy, 9:27 avg

We were in my hometown visiting for the Memorial Day Weekend and I took advantage of being home by running the course for the yearly Turkey Trot. I hate this course. It’s my Eleanor, I guess you could say (who knows where’s that from??) For some reason, I can never do well at this race. Maybe it’s home court jitters, I don’t know, but I always struggle bus it. Anyway, whenever we’re home, I try and run this 5k so that I can somehow train my brain to beat it. It’s not even that hard. Ugh.

The mountain on top of my left shoulder is in Mexico and the mountain to the right of me is in Arizona :)

Monday, 5/30–4 miles easy, 9:45 avg

I finally was able to meet up with a sub group of a running group I’m in. They always meet on Mondays at 5 but I somehow can never make it. Since it was Memorial Day, my husband had the day off and I was able to go out for another easy run.

Tuesday, 5/31–4 miles tempo, 8:38 avg

I felt ready for a good run on Tuesday, just in time for our 100 degree weather. Yep, 100+ degrees out to say good-bye to May.

Ice pop at the end--necessary.

Ice pop at the end–necessary.

Splits–8:27, 8:42, 8:44, 8:43

I started out a bit too fast but I was please at the consistency for the remainder miles. It’s something I’ve been working on all year and I’m happy I’m getting better at it.

Wednesday, 6/1–Global Running Day 5k, 8:23 avg

Our run club had an informal 5k to celebrate this special day and oh my goodness gracious, was it effing hot out there. Another over 100 degree day.

Splits were awful–8:07, 8:22, 8:33

Last I checked, a 5k is 3.1 miles!! Bleh...lol

Thursday, 6/2–Rest Day

You should notice (and I’m making you if you hadn’t 😉 ), that I had done 4 days of straight running. This was done purposely as again, I’m training to get myself used to Hanson’s insanity of 6 days of running with no rest. I figured I’d start slow with 4 days straight, lol.

Friday, 6/3–4.23 easy miles, 9:14 avg

13397076_10106328803109731_1705256404_o

You know you guys wanna move here….

This was tough because I started off easy, saw the first mile split and was pleased, and then continued running easy, saw the second mile a little faster….then continued running easy and saw the third mile faster, and then figured what the heck, I’ve already made this into a mini progression run–might as well make the last mile a little faster.

Splits–9:41, 9:24, 9:12, 8:43

I think Hanson’s easy runs will be tough for me. A lot of the miles are supposed to be done easy and my prescribed easy pace is 9:40-10:20. It’s crazy to even say this, but my easy comfort zone right now is around the 9 minute mark. I’m going to have work a little to get to Hanson’s easy. But, I’m pretty positive that once I get going with the plan, the accumulated exhaustion will settle and then Hanson’s easy probably won’t feel so easy anymore, lol!

Saturday, 6/4–Rest Day

I thought I’d be able to squeeze a run in, but I had an 8 o’clock hair appointment and didn’t want to rush to it. So, I slept in 😀

Sunday, 6/5–Long Run 6 miles, 9:19 avg

My Moms Run This Town Chapter meets on Sundays, so I ran my long run with them. We had a new mom join and I ran my first two miles with her to keep her company–10:14, 9:59. She turned around then as she was only doing 4.

I continued on with another mom to finish my six–9:05, 8:51, 8:55, 8:48. This was a good run as it had been a while since I’d done any road run over a 5 miler (since April 23rd!!).

From Sunday to Sunday, I had a 24.6 mile week. Pretty good 🙂

–How was your running week? Do you “train for training”?

–How do you get yourself to run easy?

–What’s the temperature like where you’re at? Do you wanna move to Arizona?
