Pre-Season Marathon Training: Week 3

It was a good week.

I almost left it at that ^^^ Wouldn’t it have made for a funny blog post, LOL??

Anyway, here’s the boring details 😀

Monday, 6/13–4 easy miles, 9:37 avg

I was hellbent on getting my easy miles to be easy going into Week 3, and I did a way better job at keeping it steady.

Splits–9:38, 9:48:9:35, 9:34

I think it helped that it was 90 degrees out (at 7 p.m.).

Tuesday, 6/14–5 morning miles, 9:11 avg; 3 evening miles, 9:37 avg

I did a two for Tuesday helping my girl Foxy Jen on her workout. 1 mile WU, 3 miles of something–I forgot what her specific plan was, lol–and one mile CD.

Splits–10:14, 8:54, 8:53, 8:49, 9:05 <—we didn’t do so well keeping the last mile a cool down :/

Then, I ran 3 easy (and very hot) evening miles with some buddies.

Wednesday, 6/15–Rest Day

Hanson’s has Wednesdays as the sole rest day. Gonna start sticking it in there to get used to it.

Thursday, 6/16–7 morning miles, 9:31 avg; 2.2 evening miles, 10:35 avg

Another double. I did another workout with Jen. She had a 1 mile WU, 5 miles MP, and 1 mile CD. I really think that the only way I’ve been helping her is by keeping her company because I seem to ruin her pacing. She was supposed to be at a 9:45 pace for her MP miles and our splits were:

Splits–10:01 WU, 9:33, 9:37, 9:36, 9:18, 9:14, 9:29 CD =FAIL

Then, in the evening, it was RoadRunner’s monthly Adventure Run! Our group decided the only thing we wanted to accomplish was running to the water slide and back. It’s been ridiculously hot here in Phoenix.

After the run were the raffles and I won a free entry to a local 5k next month!! 😀

Friday, 6/17–Rest Day

I meant to run. But I had gotten home pretty late the night before and said no to my alarm clock. So I spent the morning tracking Suzy‘s marathon online (she killed it, tying her PR of 3:06 <– you read that right).

Plus, my husband and I had a rare date night and no way would I ruin my hair with a morning run.

Yes, I made my husband take a pic of me. Yes, I'm wearing my Garmin.

Yes, I made my husband take a pic of me. Yes, I’m wearing my Garmin.

We had plans to go a Spanish rock concert of two my favorite bands, Hombres G and Los Enanitos Verdes. It’s seriously times like these when I wished the whole world spoke Spanish. People are missing out on some amazing music.

Saturday, 6/18–Easy 4 miles, 9:58 avg

After a week of two doubles, a mid-week longish run, a mild hangover, and 100 degree weather, it wasn’t difficult keeping the pace easy for this run.

Splits–10:25, 10:11, 9:53, 9:26

Total miles for Week 3–25.58 I feel really good with the build up; week one 21 miles, and week two 22 miles. It’s still super low compared to what awaits me, but I like where I’m headed and how I’m feeling. Just want to stay injury free 🙂

–How was your running week?

Pre-Season Marathon Training: Week 2

Hiya!! Last week was a little rough as my little guy caught a stomach bug at the end of the week and he wanted more mommy cuddles than usual (which already is a lot, lol!). So my week started off strong and then weaned out–totally okay, as this is pre-season and all is still right with the training world (i.e. Hanson’s Crazy Method hasn’t started).

Monday, 6/6–6 miles (1 WU, 3 Tempo, 2 CD)

My good friend, I call her Foxy Jen b/c she’s an ardent fundraiser for the Michael J. Fox for Parkinson’s Research, is training for the Chicago Marathon and had this workout planned–for her it was speed work (3×1) but I counted it as tempo as it’s close to my goal marathon pace.

Splits– WU 9:47, 8:17, 8:27, 8:24, CD 9:04, 9:16

Her miles were supposed to be at 8:35 but she was feeling it and I tried to reel her in as best as I could, lol!

Tuesday, 6/7–4 miles easy, 9:00 avg

It was ridiculously hot as I ran these miles at 6 p.m. in what may have only been 95 degree weather; it felt like 105. Speaking of which, this is this week’s forecast:

LOL--on the real though, it's supposed to be 120 on Saturday..

LOL @ Monday (today)–on the real though, it’s supposed to be 120 on Saturday..

Despite the heat, it was tough to reel myself in as the miles were still faster than what my easy pace should be. I was happy I was at least consistent.

Splits– 8:58, 8:59, 9:06, 9:00

Pretty impressive, eh?

Wednesday, 6/8–4 miles easy, 39:09 total time

I hit the treadmill for these miles and while it tells me the pace I’m running during the run, I haven’t figured out what my average pace is for the entire run when I’m done. So I just note the total time so I can enter it in Garmin Connect. I do know that I made sure these were truly easy as I had the treadmill setting between the 9:20 and 10:00 minute for the four miles.

Thurdsay, 6/9–4 miles easy, 8:55 avg

I’m finding it hard to run easy when I’m outside since I can’t “control” my pace like on a treadmill.

Splits–9:01, 8:49, 9:01, 8:50

But like I said in last week’s recap, I think once marathon training really starts, and I start doing Hanson’s SOS (Something of Substance) runs, my easy runs really will be easy runs, lol!

Friday, 6/10–Rest Day

This was the first day of little guy being sick

Saturday, 6/11–Rest Day

I had 6 miles planned in the a.m. but little guy was sick all night and morning.

Sunday, 6/12–8 miles: 4 miles run/walk, 4 miles 9:00 avg

I met up with my chapter’s Moms Run This Town group and we had only one mom show up. She had her 4 month old with her and we did a walk/run for 4 miles. It was this mom’s longest workout and she was so happy and proud of herself 🙂

13435448_10106351369691121_6730628441904441025_n

I didn’t feel fulfilled though, as this wasn’t what I had planned and having already had 2 consecutive rest days and a 6 miler that didn’t happen, I needed to run. So I did another 4 around my neighborhood.

Splits–9:33, 8:45, 8:55, 8:47

Total Miles: 22.13

–How was your running week?

–Should I run in today’s 199 degree weather?

–I introduced my kids to Scooby Doo cartoons this week 😀 Did you watch this growing up?

Don’t forget, I still have the FREE entry to the Phoenix Half or Full Marathon going on on my Insta!!

Check out my Insta for deets!

Happy Hump Day!! It certainly is in HellyLand as I’m so happy to share with you that I was chosen to be a Phoenix Marathon ambassador 😀 If you’ve been reading this blog a while, then you’ll remember this was my very first marathon back in 2014.

Each year since, the race has given me some pretty special moments–my first DNF in 2015, and my current half PR in 2016. You’re probably thinking how my DNF could be “special” but it was. I learned so much from that low moment as much as learned from my high at this year’s race.

It’s a race I’m pretty certain I’ll do each year because I really do love it. I love the course–it’s not intimidating at all

Screen Shot 2016-06-06 at 6.37.04 PM

and I love that so many of my friends do it. It’s just a big running party. For it being *the* Phoenix Marathon, it’s not a huge race (yet) so it has a real homey feel to it. The start of the full has bonfires to keep us warm (it’s cold here in February! 50 degrees cold!) and fireworks to send us off.

It’s also a race many are finding out is a good course to BQ. Good ‘ol Suz killed the course last year and several of my friends have come out of there with qualifying times.

Because I want everyone to come visit me in Arizona and because I know you’ll want to escape your cold in Februrary, I’m giving away a FREE entry to the Phoenix HALF or FULL. The giveaway is on my Instagram only (sorry non Insta ppl). If you don’t have Instagram or don’t want to wait, you can use Helly10 for $10 off your registration for the FULL or HALF distance. Sign up and run with meeeeee!!!! ❤ , helly

–Do you have a local race you always participate in?

–How’s the weather where you’re from in February? (It’s bliss here.)

Linking up with Smitha and Erica for their Wednesday Giveaway Roundup!!
